Spacemen 3

Walking With Jesus

Spacemen 3

Walking With Jesus

They come from Rugby, a small town in the middle of England where every second band tries to sound like Spacemen 3. In general, they have developed a style that has been adapted by many English bands, the best known examples of which are My Bloody Valentine and Loop. “Loop are like Donovan, we are like Dylan.”

Every year they leave and tour Europe. In addition to their instruments, hashish and heroin are part of your luggage.

When I asked them if they were still taking heroin, they first had a half-hour conversation about the difficulties of getting drugs.

At some point Sonic Boom remembered that I had asked a question. “Yes, of course we still take heroin. We use it to expand consciousness, it is not that we are addicted to heroin. We are in favor of legalizing heroin anyway, so using it is less and less dangerous. People become dependent on it. If you take heroin, it’s like going for a walk with Jesus.”

Did religion affect your music?

Sonic Boom: “We are religious, but not in the real sense, it is not that we believe in God or Jesus. We believe in the heavenly kingdom in everyone.”

How do you develop your songs?

S.B .: “I don’t think we develop our songs, we try to keep them very minimal and not to make songs that are too complicated. I would say it’s the opposite of developing. We’re trying to get rock ‘n’ roll to its beginnings in blues and African folk music.”

Would you classify your music in the New Age area?

S.B .: “So far, we have rarely been involved in New Age, but I can already see the connection.
I don’t find New Age an insult either. There are some good musicians who worked with elements of the New Age before New Age existed. Laurie Anderson for example or Kraftwerk’s Radioactivity.”

I think your live program differs a lot from the studio material.

S.B .: “Yes, right. I also don’t know exactly what the reason is. Live we try to put the audience in a good mood within 90 minutes. In the studio we always have the thought that once it is pressed on a record it will be forever. In the studio we use more acoustic instruments that we don’t have live because it’s a problem to create the right volume with them.”

In the subsequent concert in the Hamburg Markthalle, which is half full, they make a deafening noise with very melodic songs that let you pass the time.

In conclusion, I would like you to say a few sentence to the following words:

Purity: “Purity is beautiful and ugly at the same time. Purity comes from the soul.”

Love: “Love is the greatest in the world. Love is something that everyone understands.”

Suicide: “Suicide takes your life.”

Revolution: “Revolution means change.”

Accuracy: “Accuracy has something to do with our music, because it is pure and accurate. Accuracy has a lot to do with what we do and how we do it. For example, the decision to use heroin to write the songs…”
