11 June 1989 – Roadmender Centre, Northampton

Pete Kember – Jason Pierce – Will Carruthers – Johnny Mattock

A rare late support slot, and not one that I’ve seen advertised anywhere. This was the day after the first date on a Spacemen 3 headlining tour of the UK, so it may have been arranged at the last minute, seeing as it was fairly local to the band who had a gap of three days between the first and second gig of their tour, and that their management arranged a lot of Northampton shows at the time and may have sorted them out as a support act.

Ticket courtesy of Gordon Hymus. He says: “Support band was Spaceman 3 for this gig. I remember the security all wearing Spaceman 3 t-shirts with ‘for all the fucked up children of the world’ on the back.” Mark Refoy remembers: “I saw them at this gig, they were brilliant, they absolutely stole the show. They did How Does It Feel and it absolutely blew my mind. I saw them after and said to Jase how much I loved the guitar line in that song.” (Mark later said that he may be thinking of another Northampton Spacemen 3 gig, but someone else on the Spacemen 3 Appreciation Group (UK) on Facebook remembers being there.)
