SPACEMEN 3 aus dem mittelenglichen Städtchen Rugby sind wohl eine der psychedelischen Bands der 80er Jahre. Die consequent durchgespielten Beats, ihre rasend schnell gespielten, maßlos übersteuerten Gitarren erzeugen laut SONIC (Gesang + Gitarre) den “Sound Of Confusion”.
Dieses und noch viel mehr erzählte er bei einem Interview, das wir unmittelbar vor dem Auftritt in der Dortmunder “Livestation” mit ihm führten.
SPACEMEN 3 besteht momentan aus vier Mitgliedern: Sonic, Jason (auch Gitarre + Gesang), Willie (Bass) und John “But Fuck Rabbit” (Schlagzeug). Die Band existiert seit 1982, die erste Platte “Sound Of Confusion” ershien aber erst ’85.
SONIC: Von ’82 bis ’85 spielten wir in kleinen Clubs in England und warteten auf einen Plattenvertrag. Die Zeit war noch nicht reif. Damals interessierte sich kaum einer für unsere Musik.
Ihre Musik kann man als “New Noise Psychedelly” bezeichnen. Wurden sie durch die 60er – 70er Jahre beeinflußt?
SONIC: Auch, aber nicht nur. Damals (’82) waren es unter anderem MC5 und die STOOGES die wir hörten. Heute nicht mehr. Ich denke es gab Psychedelic-Music in den 60ern, in den 70ern, in den 80ern und es wird sie auch in den 90ern geben. Es wird immer ein Verlangen nach dieser Musik geben. Schon vor tausenden von Jahren gab es psychodelische Musik. Die südamerikanischen Indianer nahmen schon damals psychodelische Drogen und machten dazu psychodelische Musik.
Die aktuelle Lp heißt “Playing With Fire”. Spielen die SPACEMEN 3 mit dem Feuer?
SONIC: Immer. Über manche Dinge wie Selbstmord, Revolution und Drogen redet man in England gen darüber. Da kann man sich matürlich irgendwann mal die Finger verbrennen.
Wie und worüber schreiben sie ihre Songs?
SONIC: Alle Songs sind persönliche Erfahrungen. Ihre Inhalte sind sehr spezielle Dinge. Wir versuchen Gefühle einzufangen und sie durch wie ein Liebeslied. Wenn ich mich schlecht fühle während ich einen song schreibe, sollen sich die Menschen beim Zuhören auch schlecht fühlen.
Welchen Grund hat es, daß du und Jason während der Show auf Stülen sitzen?
SONIC: Der Grund ist ganz einfach. Wenn wir sitzen verbrauchen unsere Beine keine Energie; dadurch können wir alle unsere Energie in den Armen sammeln und so schneller und intensive spielen.
Spielen SPACEMEN 3 gerne in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland?
SONIC: Deutschland ist das schlechteste Land (lacht dann nach einer Pause). Nein, Deutschland ist okay. Das Publikum ist etwas seltsam. Die Leute geben nur sehr ungern, sind reserviert. Erst wenn die Band die Bühne verlaßt fangen sie an zu toben. Würden die Leute von anfang an zeigen, daß sie eine Band mögen, bekämen sie immer ein besseres Konzert zu sehen.
Das Publikum in Dortmund scien wohl gezeigt zu haben, daß SPACEMEN 3 ihnen zusagt, den die Band gab ein tolles Konzert (Achtung: subjektiver Eindruck des Autors!). “A screaming Wall of Sound” tat sich auf. Durch Nebelschwaden drang eine Verschmelzung von Lärm und Schönheit auf einen ein und schien zumindest einige zu veraubern. Ein Ereignis besonderer Art.

SPACEMEN 3 from the middle town of Rugby are probably one of the psychedelic bands of the 80s. The consistently played beats, their incredibly fast played, excessively overdriven guitars create the “Sound Of Confusion” according to SONIC (vocals + guitar).
He told this and much more in an interview that we conducted with him immediately before the performance in the Dortmund “Livestation”.
SPACEMEN 3 currently consists of four members: Sonic, Jason (also guitar + vocals), Willie (bass) and John “But Fuck Rabbit” (drums). The band has existed since 1982, but the first record “Sound Of Confusion” was not released until 1985.
SONIC: From 82 to 85 we played in small clubs in England and waited for a record deal. The time was not yet ripe. At that time hardly anyone was interested in our music.
Their music can be described as “New Noise Psychedelly”. Were you influenced by the 1960s – 1970s?
SONIC: Also, but not only. Back then (’82) it was MC5 and the STOOGES that we heard. Not today. I think there was psychedelic music in the 60s, 70s, 80s and it will be in the 90s too. There will always be a desire for this music. There was psychedelic music thousands of years ago. Even then, the South American Indians were taking psychedelic drugs and making psychedelic music.
The current LP is called “Playing With Fire”. Do the SPACEMEN 3 play with fire?
SONIC: Always. Some things like suicide, revolution and drugs are talked about in England. Of course you can burn your fingers at some point.
How and what do they write their songs about?
SONIC: All songs are personal experiences. Your content is very special. We try to capture feelings and pass them through like a love song. If I feel bad while I’m writing a song, I want people to feel bad listening to it.
What is the reason you and Jason sit on chairs during the show?
SONIC: The reason is very simple. When we sit, our legs do not use any energy; this way we can all collect our energy in our arms and play faster and more intensely.
Do SPACEMEN 3 like to play in the Federal Republic of Germany?
SONIC: Germany is the worst country (then laughs after a pause). No, Germany is okay. The audience is a little strange. People are very reluctant to give, they are reserved. Only when the band leaves the stage do they start to rave. If people showed that they like a band from the start, they would always see a better concert.
The audience in Dortmund seemed to have shown that they liked SPACEMEN 3, because the band gave a great concert (attention: subjective impression of the author!). “A screaming wall of sound” opened up. A fusion of noise and beauty penetrated through the fog and seemed to enchant at least some. A special kind of event.
