Pete Kember – Jason Pierce – Pete Bain – Sterling Roswell
This was the night when the South of England was hit by a huge storm. The damage was extensive, with an estimated 15 million trees torn down, and there were several deaths. Pete Bain recalls: “I went down on the beach with Jason, the wind was really strong, I was holding my leather jacket open and trying to take off. It was only when we left that we saw the true scale of the damage. Trees were down everywhere, shop alarms ringing, about fifty miles from Rugby the wind died down.” Sterling Roswell recalls: “The van kept lifting off the road on the drive back to Rugby was really fckin scary.”
Well, yes, I was there. It didn’t seem to matter too much at the time but the gig was quite poorly attended. It started slow but as things fired up everybody chilled and such was the space many chose to sit down cross legged and groove accordingly in front of the stage. Afterwards I headed home with my ears ringing, belted by the wind and infused with alcohol and so went on to crash out. I slept through the whole raging storm over that night. As I walked to work with a neighbour the next day his constant refrain to concerned residents was “hey, if you see a shed in your back garden, it’s mine! A corny joke, but anyway, how we laughed. Love the Spacemen and Peter Kember’s solo stuff. If you can judge someone from their influences his credentials are imeccable.
