Spacemen 3 are from Rugby, central England and have two albums and two EPs to their name already. This Brussels concert on February 9 ended in apotheosis a tour of twenty-six dates, twenty-six explorations in the alchemy of brains. Indeed, the spectators present that evening at L’Ancienne Belgique could have believed themselves victims of a space-time rift and returned from the nascent psychedelism. Stromboscopic and kaleidoscopic light play, saturated guitar distortions, hypnotic beat exploded on stage and in the audience’s neurons.
With river compositions (15 to 20 minutes) close to Velvet Underground or Amon Düül 2, Spacemen 3 undertook the frontal lobotomy of a subjugated parterre. This singular approach, going against current musical fashions, had to be commented on: “For us, spychedelism is a way of life; we try all kinds of drugs, except dangerous ones like speed, and we share our experiences with the public through our music, ”says their leader Sonic Boom. Asked about a possible resemblance to the early Pink Floyd, that of Syd Barret, he explains: “There is only Interstellar Overdrive from their first album that can be compared to our music. As our experiences are personal and therefore unique, so too is our music that reflects them. “
By the time psychedelism is back in style, Spacemen 3 seems to have taken a few steps ahead.
